A truly exciting excursion on the Swabian Alb is the fossil search with children in the Urweltsteinbruch Holzmaden. More than 150 million years ago, the ground you enter there was covered with meter-high water and part of an open tropical sea. Fish, ammonites, sea dinosaurs and plants were at home there.
Today you can get to work equipped with a hammer and chisel and search together for the remnants from this time. The treasures from the past, as our children also like to call the fossils, have a real goosebumps factor.
With the AlbCard, which every overnight guest receives from the participating accommodations from the first night, the entry to the quarry is even free. Only for borrowing tools, a fee of 3 euros is charged.
Let’s go on a fossil search with children!
Already in the entrance area of the Urweltsteinbruch Holzmaden there are gigantic finds that give the children momentum for the search. Following the knocking and hammering, it goes into the quarry. Until you find the first fossil, such as bones, petrified snails or plant prints, a little patience is usually required. After some attempts the kids also get the hang of it and you will quickly notice that the fossil fever is contagious.
Our tip, look for a large stone on which you can carefully remove the stone layers of the smaller stones. For a breather, tables and benches are available under umbrellas. This is a real plus on hot summer days.
Depending on your mood, you can of course also spend the whole day there, or a detour to the opposite Urwelt-Museum Hauff. Particularly beautiful there is the garden with ancient trees and life-size dinosaurs. If you are looking for a nice café nearby, the Salut is the right place for you. In a warm atmosphere, you can enjoy delicious cakes, coffee and maybe a hot chocolate for the kids.
