The term Bergfieber isn’t found in any medical books, but it’s been around for many years and is still very much part of our vocabulary. It’s that indescribable feeling in our stomachs when we think about the mountains, whatever the season. The feeling of the fresh mountain air tickling our noses, as well as the happy flutters in our stomachs when we’re up on the mountain hiking with kids or skiing in winter. Spending time in the mountains has a way of slowing us down, even more so than a vacation on the beach. It lets us feel connected to nature and helps us appreciate the everyday things in life a bit more. And when there’s a cosy mountain hut nearby for a break, we’re as happy as can be.

So mountain fever is more than just an emotion; it’s a passion that gets stronger every day when you’re up in the mountains. And the great thing is, you can share mountain fever with friends, family and kids. Exploring the world of the mountains is even more enjoyable when you do it together.

The young mountain enthusiasts of today are the future summiters! If you want kids to catch mountain fever, you just need to find the right mountain region. As always, the key is knowing where to go with kids. Hiking with kids is a great idea. For kids, the mountains are just another playground to explore. So, here’s what we’ve got:

Are you looking for ways to get your kids excited about the great outdoors? Check out these mountain regions for hiking with kids!

Golm in the Montafon: A mountain that gets families really excited!

Golm is a beautiful mountain, and it’s even more beautiful in person! We think every family should know about the adventure mountain Golm. This mountain in Montafon is great for the whole family, with its stunning scenery, exciting trails and fun on the alpine meadow. You could easily spend the whole day at the Golm and still not have enough of it.

Hiking with kids can be easy, so you might want to take the gondola up the Golm to the mountain station. From there, you’ll find the entrance to the natural exploration trail. There are display boards with info about alpine herbs, a water playground and hands-on stations, so it’s great for kids. At the middle station, you’ll find the Matschwitz house, which is a great place to stop and refuel. You can enjoy some delicious Alpine treats, as well as tasty children’s dishes, while taking in the stunning views. With a new lease of energy, it continues to the forest slide park. You can reach the reservoir in the Affenzahn by taking one of the seven long slides. There are two more adventures waiting for you: a forest rope course and a summer toboggan run. I’d highly recommend giving both a go! After such an invigorating day in the fresh mountain air, everyone is ready to collapse into bed, just like the marmots before hibernation.

Good to know: Parents can borrow a child carrier at the Berghof. The slide park is suitable for kids from the age of 4. Here are expert tips for the forest slide park.

Walking time research path: approx. 2 hours
Distance research path: 2.4 km
Refreshment options: Berghof Golm or Gasthaus Matschwitz
Age recommendation: Ideal for beginners and all families with adventurous kids.

Lünersee: Hiking with kids around the pearl of the Alps

Just a stone’s throw from the adventure mountain Golm is the Naturjuwel Lünersee. One of the reasons you should spend at least a whole weekend in the region is that you can discover a different highlight in the Montafon every day. One of the highlights of this excursion is the turquoise-blue water of Lake Lünersee, which is also known as the pearl of the Alps. To get the best view of the lake, it’s a great idea to go for a stroll with the kids around the shore. The route is easy-going and just the right length for a relaxed hike with kids. You’ll often see cows on the roadside, and the kids love the chance to get close to the water, where a fisherman throws his fishing rod here and there.

Distance: 6.1 km
Walking time: approx. 2:00 hours
Refreshments: Douglass Hütte, Alpe Lünersee

The Silvretta-Bielerhöhe is great for mountain lovers, and this applies to kids too. The Silvretta-Bielerhöhe is a great place to get into mountain-loving, even if you’re young. The impressive Pin Buin looks over the area and makes the scenery pretty special. The Silvretta High Alpine Road is one of the most amazing mountain roads in the Alps. The lovely Wiegensee is a great place to enjoy the natural world.

Two tour tips for hiking with kids on the Silvretta:

Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße

Over a pass, past mountain lakes, small churches and grazing horses, it goes up to the Silvretta reservoir. Here it is to just look out the window, listen to the Ahhhs and Ohhhs of the kids and enjoy the panorama. With Kids you can do a round around the lake, past various streams and with foresight to the Piz Buin with its glaciers (by the way, the highest mountain in Vorarlberg). Back at the starting point there is a delicious Kaiserschmarren with a view of the lake.

Distance: 6.3 km
Riding time: approx. 2 hours
Age recommendation: Suitable for strollers and for self-running for kids from 5/6 years
Real options: Restaurant Silvrettasee, Silvretta-Haus

Wiegensee

The Wiegensee is one of the last high moor lakes in the Alps and also belongs to the Silvretta. We’re really looking forward to hiking from the Tafamunt mountain station through the untouched nature to the lake this summer. We imagine that nature becomes an adventure playground here and we can’t get over how amazing it is. It’s especially nice to bring a picnic and look for a cosy place to stop along the way.

Distance: 5.4 km
Riding time: approx. 3 hours
Age recommendation: hiking alone from 6 years
Reparing options: Alpstöbli Tafamunt
