The artisan village of Disla in Graubünden offers visitors a chance to step back in time. The lovely mountain village is known for its hard-working residents and their efforts to preserve traditional craftsmanship. A group from the village has set itself the task of preserving time-honoured machines and traditional crafts, offering visitors a unique insight into the history and culture of the region.

Disla is home to a historic cheese dairy, a sawmill and a mill. These machines have been lovingly restored to show what hard work and a simple life in the mountains was like. Everything here is about longevity and quality, which are often lost in the globalised consumer society with its mass production. These values are closely linked to sustainable thinking and action, as they encourage the conscious use of resources and a long-term perspective.

A visit to the craftsmen’s village is a great experience for all the family, especially the kids. See how the huge saw is set in motion by water power, how linseed oil was pressed in the past and what sophisticated mills there were for grinding flour back then.

We were really touched by the story of Bruno, one of the dedicated villagers. As we walk through the village, he tells the kids stories from his childhood, which they really enjoy. He only had to go to school for six months of the year, so the kids would love to swap places. But when they hear how he had to help out on the farm in the summer, and even had to spend the whole summer alone on an alpine pasture with over 60 animals at the age of 13, even the kids quickly realise that life back then was no walk in the park and that not all vacations are the same.

The Swisstainable Kids programme also includes a visit to the artisan village of Disla. This programme teaches kids about sustainability and environmental protection in a fun way. Find out more here.
