A golden adventure in Switzerland

The lovely village of Disentis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden is home to a real treasure that not only features in history books, but also captures the imagination of adventurers of all ages: the largest gold discovery in Switzerland. In fact, 120 grams of pure gold were extracted directly from the Vorderrhein.
This rich vein of gold is the result of the meeting of two tectonic plates, which push the gold upwards. Even today, you can still find small gold nuggets in the sandbanks of the Rhine. It’s a great motivator to go out and look for gold yourself. It’s twice as much fun with kids, because they’re really enthusiastic about gold panning. So it’s the perfect family day out in Graubünden.
Together with Priska and Sandro, two real professionals, they set off in search of their own little gold treasure. After a quick introduction, the whole family gets kitted out with professional rubber boots, shovels and buckets. Then it’s time to head out!
It’s time to scoop, wash, shake and shake. There’s a sense of adventure in the air as you wait to see if a glint of gold will appear in the next pan. Everyone is really excited about the prospect of finding something and doesn’t even notice how time flies.
