Do you think there are only safaris in South Africa? Not at all! The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park with its salt lakes is a true natural treasure that attracts an incredible variety of wildlife. It’s a real treat for the senses! This type of safari is a wonderful adventure for families, and it’s a great option for those who don’t want to fly first. It’s just as impressive as a plane trip!

The lovely folks at the National Park Centre in Illmitz will be happy to show you around the park, even if you don’t have a tour booked. During the holidays, there are some wonderful courses for children where you can discover animals and inspect plants. There’s also a lovely little exhibition space and a great playground.

Off to the safari with kids!

With our wonderful, experienced rangers, we’ll first head into the national park bit by bit by car. As soon as we spot animals, we’ll pull out our binoculars and observe and explain them together. Our rangers are so knowledgeable about the animal species, and they’ll quickly capture the children’s attention with their impressive knowledge.

We were lucky enough to meet some amazing animals during our visit, including steppe cattle, sabre-toothed beaks, white donkeys, water buffalo and red-foot falcons!

As we strolled through the park, it really sank in just how special this place is. The cross-border national park is an amazing 300 km²! It’s a truly unique place, with gorgeous meadows, salt lakes and the stunning Lake Neusiedler, which is Austria’s largest lake and has a beautiful reed belt. The lovely region has a big impact on the Pannonian climate, which is blessed with lots of sun, wind and not too much rain.

The great news is that the safaris with children take place all year round and in any weather. The lovely National Park Centre is the perfect place to start your safari adventure. It’s right in the heart of the Austrian part of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park.

If you’d rather explore the park on your own, we’d highly recommend a bike tour from PODOBEACH (the lido in Podersdorf) to Hell* with a stop in the Buschenschank. As you go along, you can stop and look for animals along the way. We’ve got all the tour details right here for you! *In this case, ‘Hell’ is a bit of a wink-wink, so we’ll just call the place by its name. The view from the observation tower with the same name also immediately shows you the opposite!

And there are even more lovely places in Burgenland that are perfect for families with children!
