Rust on Lake Neusiedl is a free town and it calls itself a jewel on the lake. During our visit, we made an interesting discovery. And it’s true! The old town has a romantic feel, it’s a stork hotspot, there are some great places to enjoy wine, and there’s a lovely lakeside promenade. This makes the town on the western shore a real beauty spot.

Rust is a great place for a family holiday. We’d like to tell you about our favourite day in the city of storks.

We started our day by the water at the Hotel am See in Rust. The hotel offers beautiful, spacious family rooms with bunk beds and a playroom for the kids. There is also the Burgenland Card, which gives you free entry to the neighbouring lido.

Canoe adventure in the reed belt

If you fancy a canoe trip through the reed belt of Lake Neusiedl, you can also start from next door. It’s a great place for birds and a beautiful, natural spot in its own right. If you’re looking for a relaxing way to start your day, a paddle through the green reeds is a great choice. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in nature and listen to the sounds of awakening birdlife. It’s a great way to start the day, and the kids will love it too. After about an hour or two, you’ll reach the shore, and it’ll be time to head back to reality.

Swimming fun with kids at Seebad Rust

After a relaxing time on the water, it’s time for some action! The water slides at the Rust lido are a big hit. There is a separate pool for the little ones to splash around in. If you have time, be sure to stop by the mini golf course, the bouncy castle and the playground at the back of the sunbathing lawn.

Discovery tour through the old town

In the late afternoon, we head to the listed old town of Rust. There is a stork’s nest on almost every roof of the baroque houses – count how many you can spot with the kids! For a breathtaking view over the whole town as far as the lake, you can climb the tower of the Catholic church. But the real charm of the old town lies in the pretty streets that lead from one wine tavern to the next. Here you can sample wine and kids can enjoy a glass of grape juice.

Stork Meadow with playground

Just a short walk from the old town, the Stork Meadow is also easily accessible on foot. This is pretty much the storks’ favourite place in Rust. The local stork association has set up another feeding station for the storks on the shores of Lake Neusiedl. You can get up close to the birds. There’s even an extra observation tower where one or two fans often sit with huge binoculars and will be happy to let you look through them.

The large playground next to it with a fast zip wire is perfect for a quick break. If you like, bring a picnic and enjoy the view of the lake, the storks and the children playing in the background.

End the day at the lake in Rust with kids

For dinner, we can recommend the Katamaran Restaurant on the shores of Lake Neusiedl. You’ll meet people from all over, not just tourists. The sunset view from the restaurant terrace is well worth a visit. There are some great Austrian dishes on the menu, as well as some excellent local wines. A great way to end our favourite day in Rust with the kids.
