Just a stone’s throw from the Ammersee and Pilsensee lakes, Herrschinger Moos is a natural beauty spot.

The family excursion kicks off with a relaxed S-Bahn ride to Herrsching am Ammersee. From there, the route takes you along the lovely shores of Lake Ammersee and on towards Ellwang, away from the hustle and bustle and traffic. You’ll pass flowering meadows and ancient trees that look like they’ve been taken straight out of a postcard. Between the old farms, the chickens clucking happily by the roadside and sometimes on the road and the cows grazing peacefully, there’s a touch of nostalgia in the air.

After a longer stretch through the forest, you’ll come to Pilsensee lake, with its deep blue water, small boats and gentle waves lapping against the shore. The path leads through Hechendorf down to the Pilsensee lido. It’ll take you around 1.5 hours to walk this route, but you can get there quicker by bike.

Pilsensee Lido: the ideal reward after a hike

Once you arrive at the Lido, you can find a nice spot on the sunbathing lawn, admire the glistening lake and stock up on Bavarian specialities at the kiosk – from hearty bratwurst to classic cheese spaetzle and the obligatory chips. There’s also a playground for the kids, and when the weather’s good, you can take a dip in the shallow waters of Lake Pilsen. Don’t forget to pack your swimming costume!

You’ll be feeling stronger and more refreshed, so it’ll be easy to make your way back. You can either hop on the next S-Bahn to Hechendorf (about 20 minutes on foot) or walk along the railroad line back to Herrsching (about an hour).

This great summer trip with the kids not only lets you enjoy nature in Upper Bavaria, but also lets you discover new places that are just waiting to surprise us with their beauty.
